We’ve spent the last 18 months carefully planning, designing, and developing the necessary components to realize the long-term vision behind GeneratePress – a tool for block-based theme building.
The center of our project was the complete rewrite and release of our website GeneratePress 3.0. Besides the significant decrease in code overhead, it opened dynamic control over our vocabularies to develop content. The template-change feature allows you to alter themes dynamically without needing to upgrade to Child Themes a large number of times.
Eventually, our team required an assortment of block-building tools that were lightweight yet feature-rich. The blocks had to be multipurpose, not individual blocks with specific purposes. This resulted in GenerateBlocks and GenerateBlocks Pro.
With GeneratePress 3.0 and GenerateBlocks in place, we could now deliver block-based theme building.

Dynamic Data

Block Elements has added dynamic data to our special GenerateBlocks block plugin, so now you can add these elements easily!

Dynamic Data

While making use of the Headline or Buttons block in the GenerateBlocks app, we can now require them to utilize the following Dynamic Text Types:

  • Title – the post/page/term title of the current page.
  • Posting date – Published or updated date of the latest post.
  • Post author name – the name of the post author.
  • List of terms – the terms associated with your chosen taxonomy.
  • A custom field name’s value is referred to as post-meta.
  • Term meta – A term custom field name’s value for the term.
  • The value of a custom user profile name author meta.

We can even use Dynamic Link Types for this purpose.

  • Single post – The writer of this article’s link is the URL of the current item.
  • Author archives – The link to the archival records for the current author.
  • Comments area – The link to the post’s comments is shown here.
  • Next page of posts – The link to the next page of the archive comes up.
  • Previous page of posts – Blog post link to the previous page of previous articles.
  • Post meta – the value of a custom field name.
  • Term meta – the value of a term custom field name.
  • Author meta – the value of a user custom field name.

With these new capabilities available in Headlines and Buttons, Can Now Create Animated Elements directly in the Editor. There’s no requirement for complex Customizer options with some constraints – the real-time choice is available.

Content Templates

Content Templates allow you to replace the theme design of your theme, regardless of whether you’re in archives (the blog) or single posts/pages.

There are no limits to what you are able to modify and design now that you have complete control over the design.

For example, here’s the default blog design in two columns.

Previously, we were restricted to using the Customizer when determining the layout of our articles. Now, we control the design directly in the block editor.
Generating Block Components and GP Elements with GenerateBlocks lets us use our dynamic content in articles we develop. We can then incorporate these components into our live webpage by applying the Display Rules we have previously chosen.

So our default post columns now turn into this:

Can Use These templates on any post or page on your site. And Content Rules can help you set up separate layout templates for the various parts of your site.
Moreover, you can add different Content Templates to pages with unique subjects, custom fields, or the first one in the same Display Rule. That means that the main page for your blog can use utterly different Content Templates for various other carriers.
Use these settings to enable and disable parent templates in certain conditions not taking place.

Page Hero Templates

Our Header Element uses Template Tag Macros to construct page heroes if you are acquainted with our Header Element. This is great, but utilizing Extended Velocity Macros is generally recommended to create page heroes better visually – you ought to have HTML/CSS understanding.

Now, we can scrap the custom HTML/CSS and build our page heroes directly in the editor.

Once we customize a template with the Page Hero HTML snippet, we can put Display Rules to ensure that the template displays correctly throughout our site. Here is the screenshot above to sample what this template looks like within one of our single posts.
Live page hero using our Page Hero Template.
We can now incorporate rich content directly into our pages with a single mouse click, say goodbye to ugly template tags or HTML, and display everything dynamic in the block editor.

Post Meta Templates

In many cases, a post meta area is right for you to keep the default Content Template the block editor provides. However, you may want to create your post metadata area in exceptional circumstances. Post Meta Templates are doubly helpful; they allow for complex formatting in the post meta data area.

While editing your page, you will discover author avatars, author names, published on dates, updated dates, comment links, et cetera right from your hand. The PHP filters and checkboxes from Customizer are no more. You can also take advantage of the Buttons block to make your post terms using separate buttons!

Post Navigation Templates

Our dynamic data can have its source set to land on data from the current, following, or previous articles. We can create Post Navigation Templates for our single posts with this setting.
We now have a custom post navigation section with the titles, featured images, and author names of the most recent and previous posts. Using the above, we have a custom post navigation area with the tags, featured images, and author names of the following previous posts.

Archive Pagination Templates

Claudio can generate an archive’s next and previous Pages using the Next Page and Previous Page link options in a custom template.

With GeneratePress, we’re just getting started as far as the extent of its customizability is concerned. This is just the first step before making GeneratePress a fully-featured hybrid theme. You have the freedom to design your theme elements when using the block editor in addition to the power offered by Display Rules to restrict their expansion in certain places when you require them. You no longer need to worry about categories or different designs for different articles!

Less jQuery

We’re significantly closer to completing our entire project without jQuery in GP Premium! We’ve rewritten our Masonry and Infinite Scroll features using vanilla JavaScript.
There are two functions, jQuery (sort of mouse trap) in GP Premium, as it’s our sticky navigation, and some of the WooCommerce features (enables the jQuery function in WooCommerce by default). We have fab plans for an upgrade feature for a standard sticky feature coming in the future!

The Our Sections module is now officially deprecated. It will still work and be activated on sites that have it enabled, but it will be listed among the modules to be activated for sites that don’t currently have it enabled.

Our Original name for page layouts, or, before page builders were famous, the section was an essential part of our development. With the rise of block markers and generator blocks, it is no longer needed.
