About the organisation

The Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee (WEC) is a visitor and research center located in the harbor of Lauwersoog, Netherlands. Opening its doors to the public on April 26, 2025, the WEC serves as the new home for the Seal Center Pieterburen and aims to promote a sustainable balance between humans and nature in the Wadden Sea region.

The WEC’s mission is to foster awareness of the Wadden Sea’s ecological significance and vulnerability. By bringing together nature, science, and education, the center encourages visitors to explore the dynamic environment of the Wadden Sea and understand the importance of preserving this UNESCO World Heritage site for future generations.

At the Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee (WEC), our mission is to connect people with the extraordinary nature of the Wadden Sea and work together to protect it for generations to come. As the new home of the Seal Center Pieterburen, we continue our long-standing commitment to wildlife care, scientific research, and public education.

We care for seals.

One of our core activities is rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing seals that are sick, injured, or orphaned. These animals are vital indicators of the health of the Wadden Sea, and by caring for them, we also gain valuable insight into the condition of the wider ecosystem. Once recovered, we release them back into the wild where they belong.

We conduct research.

Our team of researchers investigates the complex and fragile ecosystem of the Wadden Sea. From studying biodiversity and tidal dynamics to tracking pollution and antibiotic resistance, we contribute knowledge that helps inform conservation policies and protect the natural balance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We educate and inspire.

We believe awareness leads to action. That’s why we offer interactive exhibits, workshops, and educational programs for all ages. Visitors can explore the unique life of the Wadden Sea—from its smallest organisms to its largest predators—and discover how their actions can make a positive impact.

We collaborate.

We work closely with local fishermen, entrepreneurs, scientists, and community members. By combining traditional knowledge with innovative science, we aim to develop sustainable solutions that benefit both nature and people.

At the WEC, we are more than a visitor center—we are a living lab, a rescue facility, and a bridge between science and society. Together, we’re making sure the Wadden Sea stays wild, thriving, and accessible to future generations.

About the role

At the Seal Rehabilitation Department of the WEC, our core mission is to provide expert care for injured, sick, or orphaned seals with the goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat. As part of our team, you’ll be directly involved in the daily care and recovery process of these wild marine animals.

We serve as the frontline caregivers for seals in need—offering medical support, nourishment, and a clean, safe environment for healing. Working closely with veterinary staff and rehabilitation nurses, we ensure each animal receives the best possible chance at a successful return to the wild.

Daily Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with Feeding
Preparing feedings to the seals based on their individual diets. This includes monitoring eating behavior.
  • Administering Medication
Supporting nurses and vets by helping administer medicine
  • Weighing and Monitoring
Helping to weigh seals regularly to track health progress. Observing behavior and noting any changes that might indicate health issues.
  • Handling and Moving Seals
Safely assisting with moving animals between different pools or treatment areas as needed. This includes supporting procedures during check-ups or transport.
  • Cleaning Enclosures
Keeping all seal enclosures, pools, and working areas hygienic is essential. Daily cleaning tasks help prevent the spread of disease and ensure a comfortable space for recovery.
  • Supporting General Operations
From preparing food and restocking supplies to updating records and coordinating tasks with colleagues, we help keep the entire department running smoothly.
